Special Somatic Sensory Nuclei, Computer Reconstruction. This reconstruction highlights the nuclei that receive input from the vestibulocochlear nerve (VIII). This nerve and the optic nerve (II) convey information that is used to assess the position of the body in space and are designated as special somatic afferents. The vestibulocochlear nerve has two components. The vestibular part conveys information from the semicircular canals and the utricle and saccule to the vestibular nuclear complex. The cochlear part conveys auditory information from the cochlea to the dorsal and ventral cochlear nuclei, which surround the inferior cerebellar peduncle.
